THE UNION GARDENS INFANT SCHOOL

When completed in September 2015, the Union Gardens Infant School will be an approximately 9,450 sq. ft. facility, on designated lands in the constituency of South West St. Andrew. The school, which will house 150 students aged, 3 1/2-5 years, is being designed using the basic planning standards for early childhood institutions, established by the Early Childhood Commission of Jamaica (ECC).

Architectural Design and Features

· Covered walkway-linked buildings with play areas, adjoining semi-enclosed teaching areas and landscaped common areas.

· 'Gentle' steps and ramps to facilitate general ease of movement including the physically challenged.

· An auditorium with an alternative independent access, accessible by the community.

· All the interior spaces are to be shaded and fully utilize natural light and ventilation.

· Electrical/mechanical infrastructure for solar power is to be provided as part of the scheme.

· Readily available building materials and ʼsimpleʼ modular construction systems are to be incorporated into the design for cost effectiveness, reduced construction time and ease of future expansion.

Educational Amenities

· Cadre of teachers trained/certified by the Ministry of Education.

· Free transportation to and from school.

· Students will not be required to pay fees, and will receive a free hot lunch daily.

· Extra-curricular activities sponsored by various private sector entities.
