How Do Poor Children Learn in Jamaica?

Most children from low-income families in Jamaica begin their educational career in overcrowded, under-equipped classrooms, often staffed by well-meaning but untrained teachers.  Maybe you have visited one of these ‘basic’ schools …where bright eyed, smiling faces greet you from the gloom of a too dark, or too small classroom.  Maybe you were once one of these smiling children. Then you know that some of these children will succeed despite the odds…but too many will be forever turned off learning.

The vision of the Union Gardens Foundation is that, regardless of economic status, a child’s early learning experience should be in a nurturing and stimulating environment.   We thank our private and public sector partners who are supporting the vision through the Union Gardens Infant School Capital Campaign.
